The Testudo (or Tortoise)

Approximately 60 Roman Legionaries form a trademark Roman maneouvre. Contrary to some popular misconceptions this maneouvre would not have been used on the battlefield to defend the soldiers against attacking enimies. It would be used to shield the soldiers whilst approaching fortifications. Once there the Romans would set fire to the fort before retreating again.
